Urban revitalization this.
Those of you listening to the news recently have probably heard about the case in front of the Supreme Court regarding the government’s right to seize private land for public use. Unfortunately, that doesn’t really roll off the tongue like ‘urban revitalization’.
Urban revitalization means that you’re renewing, or breathing new life into, some urban area. I can just imagine the justices debating this.
Thomas: Hey Sandra, want some Coke?
Stevens: You know what’d be a great way to revitalize a neighboorhood? Kick everyone out of it and put in a hotel!
O’Connor: Uh… no thanks, Clarence. What was that, Stevens?
Making the argument that you can make neighboorhoods less poor by taking all the poor people out of them is incredibly stupid. The same poor people will be just as poor, they’ll just live somewhere else. Also, considering inflation and real estate prices, they’ll probably be even poorer. If I lose my house for a school or even a highway to be built it’s one thing, but a hotel? Do you really want to lose your house for a Comfort Inn?
