Hurricane Katrina

I waited a few days to write this post since when the reports started coming in I was more infuriated at Bush than I have ever been before in my life-ever. If you know me personally, that’s saying something.

I’m not sure just how big a factor race was for who got rescued and who didn’t. Every black man in America has taken a chunk out of Bush anyway. But class and cash did make a difference, there’s no argument about that. Having a day or a month’s warning means nothing when you have no car, no plane, and no bike. It’s literally impossible to save yourself and your family.

The worst part of all this is that the local government knew about that problem. The local government even had a plan that dealt with the poor in New Orleans. But due to budget cuts (and remember, who cut them again? Oh yeah! George Bush) there was no one in charge of using the plan.

10,000 lives and billions of dollars later, maybe someone will finally realize-budget cuts don’t make anything better. Sometimes they cost lives, and when they’re there to pay for huge tax cuts to the rich, they always cost money.
